AutoCad 2000 network plotting to HP DesignJet 500

Trying to print to HP DesignJet 500 shared on Windows XP Pro SP1 from Windows 2000 SP4 with AutoCad 2000.

All instructions lean toward going through Control Panel's "Autodesk Plotter Manager" to use "Add-A-Plotter Wizard"
Can't locate "HID" file going through normal wizard. Try to download driver from HP website, but after wasting time registering for a login, discover some portions of the website don't seem to work right. Phone support and find "HP's website is having trouble" (duh!)
Support tech did recommend using "System Printer" option in Autocad. She also recommended downloading a patch from AutoDesk.com
Using system printer option returns this red X error:
Runtime Error!
Program: C:\Program Files\ACAD2000\addplwiz.exe
abnormal program termination

After applying AutoDesk's Plotting Update Patch DL125244 the error went away. Add system printer works just fine now.

The very next workstation is R14 ! It works better, but is quite different to configure. I got it to work by doing this:
Browse to printer and double click to open
Set printer as default
Remove all printers from AutoCad
Add system printer in AutoCad

Helpful info on R14 at AutoDesk
