Slow performance Windows Server 2003

add/remove programs won't open and display everything .. or just won't open at all ..

Microsoft KB # 329891 says it could be from missing registry settings. Perform the following steps to fix:

=== === === === === === ===

  • Click Start, and then click Run.
  • In the Open box, type cmd, and then press ENTER.
  • In the Command window, type regsvr32 mshtml.dll, and then press ENTER.
  • Click OK to confirm that the registry entry has been added.
  • In the Command window, type regsvr32 shdocvw.dll -i, and then press ENTER.
  • Click OK to confirm that the registry entry has been added.
  • In the Command window, type regsvr32 shell32.dll -i, and then press ENTER.
  • Click OK to confirm that the registry entry has been added.
  • Close the Command window.

Outlook Express SLOW at loading (Windows XP)

I ran across this valuable information in this forum.

===   ===   ===   ===   ===   ===   ===
Sometimes removing or disabling Windows (or MSN) Messenger
causes OE to open slowly. This will be shown by an entry
in the system error log:

The server {FB7199AB-79BF-11D2-8D94-0000F875C541} did not
register with DCOM within the required timeout.

To fix this, open Regedit and navigate to this key:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
\CLSID
\{FB7199AB-79BF-11d2-8D94-0000F875C541}
\InProcServer32

In the right-hand pane, double-click on the (Default)
value and delete whatever is entered there, leaving it
blank. Click OK. Now perform exactly the same step
with the key directly underneath, namely

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
\CLSID
\{FB7199AB-79BF-11d2-8D94-0000F875C541}
\LocalServer32

Once both (Default) values are empty, OE will open
normally

I hope this fix makes a few people happy

SFC trouble on WinXP and Win2K

This is the second time I've seen this error. The first was on a Windows XP workstation and now it's on Windows 2000. Microsoft's Q296241 recommends something, but I have successfully run this twice.

Start .. Run .. type this and hit enter: "%SystemRoot%\System32\SFC /scannow"

(SFC doesn't work in Safe Mode .. FYI)

===   ===   ===   ===   ===   ===   ===
Windows File Protection could not initiate a scan of
protected system files.

The specific error code is 0x000006ba [The RPC server
is unavailable.]

SCSI Tape drive won't back up properly

Event ID 57665 on NT Server 4.0 .. looks to be possibly a dirty tape drive.. recommend running cleaning tape and then performing a quick erase on each tape prior to normal backup job

EventID.net

Event 7 is probably from the same trouble

"
Storage device "Seagate 1" reported an error on a request to write a file mark to media.

Error reported:
Physical end of tape encountered.

Microsoft KB Q296241 has one possible fix ..

I brought up a CMD prompt and did this just fine "C:\Winnt\System32\SFC /scannow"

HuntBar:
had very strange registry trouble with this key "HKLM\Software\BTIEIN" .. permissions were all messed up and owner was funky unknown user .. take ownership and set permissions properly right before deleting this lil bugger .. all is well now !!

Google search engine hijack was fixed after this was removed:
