Tech docs come in waves too

I had this printed out in my notebook for quite some time. It's dated June 23, 2005 but the one on Microsoft's website is much newer so I figured it was time to chuck the printout and make a note here.

This is regarding troubleshooting Windows Installer service errors.

Specifically, Error 1719

I printed it on August 8, 2005 but can't remember the specifics of the service call. If it comes to me I'll be sure to share.

Notes on data recovery pricing

The most recent pricing we've ran into is $100 to analyze the drive and $700 to $3500 for the actual recovery. Price is dependant on the quantity of data recovered.

when was the last time you checked your backup ? .. well that's too long! (said like that old dude on the Wolfbrand chili commercial)

NAV '06 bargain shopping

I just saw an invoice for a 10 pack of Norton 2006 for $259.99 !

Nothing fancy like Corporate edition or anything, but at $26 per machine it's worth checking out.

Steps for adding an existing PC to domain

When changing a PC from workgroup to domain, profile files and settings often get lost, migrated or scrambled. The following steps work for me when done properly.
  • Start .. Run .. type CMD and press [Enter]
  • type CD %temp% and press [Enter] (take note of profile folder name)
  • Open Computer Management and reset password for local Administrator user
  • Join PC to domain
  • Reboot
  • Log on as local Administrator
  • Open Computer Management and add domain user to local administrators group
  • Disable all local users except for Administrator
  • Log on as domain user (to establish profile settings)
  • Log on as Administrator and perform Profile Registry hack
  • Reboot
  • Log on as domain user to test (you should have access to previous desktop and documents)
If these steps don't work, you may need to Take Ownership of the profile files and folders. .. then log on as local administrator and correct profile folder path .. reboot and test again

Lotus Domino prefers individuals to clones

I received this error and used the steps below to fix it:

Recipient user name UserName (UserName@MyDomain.com) not unique. Several matches found in Domino Directory.

  • Open Lotus Notes client
  • Open company Address Book
  • Select People
  • Click File and Export
  • Save the file. Structured Text is the default and works fine
  • Open the text file and search for the username
  • Once you identify where the duplicate record exists, remove it using the global address book

Mas90 slow printing might not really be Mas90

After dealing with Mas90 tech support (Sage), I discovered a handy little "cache" checkbox under ODBC settings for SOTAMAS90. Dirty Read and Burst Mode are also selected.

Before discovering the above settings, support asked me to Reinitialize the Crystal temp tables for Sales Order with the following steps:

  • Library Master
  • Repair
  • Reinitialize Data Files
  • Choose module and company code
  • S/O Crystal - yes
    Crw - yes

We also tried a new form code. This is the trick. If a new form code works, then Mas90 is fine and there is either something wrong with the previous form or it's code.

Sales Order Company code

of course you want to keep your antivirus from scanning SOA file types as well as the path to Mas90

LinkSys firmware round two

Another Befsr81 with old firmware appears to be the culprit for a customer losing internet connectivity every few days. I upgraded the firmware from 2.42.7.1 to 2.45.10 and moved all network cables to a 3Com switch that wasn't being utilized fully.

System is attached via cable modem.

Even if this happens again, they won't have to shut down the whole network to reset the router.

Activation Wizard Hanging

Norton Antivirus 2006 installs just fine, but Activation Wizard gets stuck on second screen.

I noticed two Symantec services not running. (One was disabled)

After setting the one to Manual and starting both, the activation wizard ran through just fine.

the putz at Symantec tech support left me hanging after asking the product ID number
