MSI TV5200-VTDF128 has elusive analog video out

If you're having trouble getting the TV Out to work on your NVidia based card, try the following set of steps:

  • Right click a blank area on your desktop and choose Properties
  • Click the Appearance tab
  • Click the Advanced button
  • Choose the GeForce FX 5200 tab
  • Select Tools in the menu on the left
  • Either place a check or remove it from Force TV Detection
  • Click OK and reboot
You should now have nView Display Settings menu option available

Do not click the Display Optimization Wizard button! If you do, or if the silly thing gets stuck on your TV display, simply go back and turn off the Force TV detection and reboot. The system should come up fine and display only on your computer monitor. At this point, you can start over by enabling the TV output and rebooting again.

All this was figured out after updating the drivers and exhausting the tech support information available.

Lotus Notes not default mail program but Office '97 thinks it is

Windows XP Pro laptop with Office '97. Customer is happy using Outlook for email, but Lotus Notes is required for database access and testing. For some reason, Lotus becoms the default mail application only when using File .. Send to .. Mail Recipient from within Word or Excel. After much headache and misdirection, Regmon helps in locating registry key responsible for this action.

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Office\8.0.. (sorry, i forgot the rest)
MAPIDLL and DLL32 with value c:\Program Files\Lotus\Notes\nmailman.dll

Apparently, Lotus decided to use the Enable MS Office 97 SendTo to Notes feature even though it is disabled in user preferences. After selecting this option, closing Notes, opening Notes and deselecting it again, the feature is now not active and Outlook is called correctly.

Below are a few items discovered during this fix:
Unable to Set Different E-Mail Programs for Different Users -Article ID : 315240

Set the default email client on a per-user basis

Trouble configuring SCSI mirror on IBM xSeries 226 server

The funtime ServerGuide ran through like it was doing all the good, but after taking out the CDs, it failed to boot. Turns out this feature has to be enabled on the Adaptec SCSI controller.

  • Boot the server and choose Ctrl+A for SCSISelect Utility
  • Select the appropriate controller (this one is on B)
  • There were only two options on this screen. Select the first one.
  • Arrow down to HostRAID and press Enter to select Enabled
  • Press Escape to return. You should have three choices now.
  • Choose Configure/View HostRAID Settings
  • C to create
  • RAID-1 is mirroring
  • Use arrows and spacebar to select drives
  • Enter twice to continue
  • Name your new array something catchy :)
  • Answer yes to the rest of the prompts
Now the ServerGuide should work fine. Support recommends version 7.3, but said 7.2.04 should work fine.

Be sure to skip hard drive/RAID configuration (cause you just did it by hand) and you're set!

BTW, these new servers make you wait for the entire RAID array to be initialized (20 - 40 minutes) before continuing.

Terminal server - handy commands

change user /install
change user /execute

These are used when switching to and from install mode for installing and using software. I like to leave a command prompt window open and use the up arrow to scroll back commands when installing and testing several programs within a short time span.

Hidden and in-your-face adware

Two bad-bads to watch out for:

c:\windows\system32\elitefbh32.exe
c:\windows\svchost.exe

The first one was detected with Hijack This! but the silly thing hids itself from the operating system. Very clever, but a royal pain in the caboose. I was able to see a few of it's little buddy files, but not the main one. And of course, when I removed the startup shortcut, it mysteriously reappeared in a few seconds. After much anger, I booted into recovery console and discovered several screenfuls of it's buddy-files as well as the main monster elitefbh32.exe Delete worked just fine on the one file, but informed me that recovery console delete doesn't support wildcards (WTF?!). I went ahead and removed a few elite folders from the Windows directory and rebooted.

Now it was no problem to remove the 30-something elite*.exe files under Win/Sys32 as well as it's buddy folders under Windows itself. HiJack This had no problem removing the startup entry, and this time, it stayed gone.

The second creepy issue was resolved by using Process Kill to kill off the svchost process and then deleting the Svchost.exe file from the Windows directory. Be careful and be quick. After killing this process, the system will shut down in 59 seconds. I recommend either doing it from a CMD prompt (like I did) or using a batch file.

This one was hard to spot because it shows up exactly the same in Task Manager as the real version of Svchost. Did I mention SpyBot detected 384 items? It did!

good luck out there !

Un-Welcome to Windows

Unsolved mystery - Windows XP Home suddenly lost all it's users. The welcome screen didn't display any names at all. Hitting Ctrl+Alt+Del brought up the standard login prompt, but no user/password combination would work. Tried hacking the administrator password, but my Linux password reset tool couldn't locate any users at all! Luckily, this wasn't the primary system and a factory reload was the easy fix.
