Windows Update errors from behind proxy/firewall

I was receiving the 0x80072EE2 error on a Windows Active Directory network behind a Novell firewall. After locating the information below, I added the hosts listed below to the Do not use proxy server for addresses beginning with exceptions list. Voila! The firewall must be configured correctly, because the update website works just fine now.

HP DeskJet 6540 Continuous Calibration

Trouble:
HP DeskJet 6540 fails to print the document sent from the computer and immediately performs a self print head calibration. During the calibration, the printer powers itself off for a few seconds and then back on after about 5 seconds. It immediately decides to re-calibrate again! This process is endless and wastes much ink and paper.

Solution from HP support technician:
Please follow the steps given below to reset the printer cycle (Hard reset):

  1. Turn the printer on.
  2. Raise the top cover of the printer.
  3. Remove ink cartridges from printer. CAUTION: Before proceeding, ensure that the cartridge latches are placed in the 'lock' (down) position.
  4. Power off the printer by pressing the power button.
  5. Disconnect the power cord and the printer cable (USB or parallel) from the back of the printer.
  6. Let the printer remain disconnected for at least 60 seconds.
  7. Reconnect the power and printer cables.
  8. Turn on the printer.
  9. Reinstall the ink cartridges into printer and make sure they lock into position.
  10. Close the top cover.

AVG "boot sector of disk c:" error

AVG version 7.1.361 errored out scanning the boot sector of disk C:

Apparently, there is a bug in this update and should simply be ignored until the next update. If you prefer, this item can be excluded from the scan.

This article ends with the following instructions:

"Boot Sector of Disk C: Reading error" issue was already
replicated in our teslab and our developers are working on it.
Do the following to fix it for now:
1) run AVG Test Center (double click the AVG desktop icon)
2) choose "System Areas Test Settings" option from "Tests" menu
3) press "Remove Boot" button
4) confirm OK

It's a temporary solution. Let me know if it doesn't help. Thank you.

Four of the five systems I saw with this error are Windows 98.

XP can't find the AD domain controller

Situation: Attempting to rename PC, receive The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted. This message appears after being prompted for domain administrator username and password. I have also seen this when first adding a new XP system to an Active Directory network.

Scenario: - Windows XP Pro SP2 workstation - Active Directory - Windows 2000 Server - Ethernet - TCP/IP -

Fix: (create and) Add the following to the Hosts. file located in C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\Etc

192.168.1.250 wizserver01 wizserver01.wizdomain wizdomain
wizserver01 - substitute your server name
wizdomain - substitute your domain name

For all who care to know this extra tidbit, the LMHosts file didn't have the effect I was looking for. Even with the following information:

192.168.1.250 wizserver01 #DOM:wizdomain #PRE
I forgot to mention the results of another test done before applying the fix:
Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
(C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>nslookup
*** Can't find server name for address 192.168.1.250: Non-existent domain
*** Default servers are not available
Default Server: UnKnown
Address: 192.168.1.250

okay .. and remember, it'll be on your test !

Media player won't play WAVs!

Windows Media player 7.1 on Windows 98 SE fails to play WAV or any other sound if DirectX is 4.x version. Upgrade to latest DirectX (version 9 maybe) and it works just fine.
