WizYo Sytes Net Tech Support
What a great place to share :) Here you will find flashes of brilliance caught for all the world to enjoy. .. Actually, these are brief articles describing how I fixed a problem. Every day, I find information online that helps me solve a mystery. So this is me giving back to the community. Thanks for stopping by.. and don't forget to tell your friends!

Now just what is all the fuss about ADware & SpyWare ?

Adware and Spyware are programs that get on your computer without your permission and cause all kinds of problems. Slow internet, slow everything, errors, lock-ups & crashes very well could be indications of adware infestation.

Experience has proven SpyBot to be the champion at not only cleaning up an infested system, but it's the best at preventing these programs from being installed behind the scenes and without your permission.

Sometimes SpyBot has a hard time cleaning a system. When I have that trouble, I use "HiJack This!" to remove startup trouble; then reboot to use those settings. This program is designed for more advanced users. There are online forums where you can get help identifying what items might be causing the trouble.

These two programs are free and are listed on my home page

This isn't so much a technical item as it is handy information collected all in one place. I had forgotten about banner pages and haven't needed them in Win2k until now.

Citrix Metaframe - Mouse stuck in Window - can't move it outside client window frame area

update - April 5 - this does not fix the problem. the closest workaround i have is to make the client go full screen. that way, there is no window area to get stuck in.

=== === === === === === ===
I just noticed this on my system. It happened a few times on a system at the office. My system is Win2k and the other one is '98. We were both running version 6-something of the client, so I upgraded both. Dunno if it's fixed .. intermittent issues are sooo fun to troubleshoot.

The only two articles on this trouble at Citrix are:

Mouse stuck inside of citrix area

Mouse stuck in "client area" with ICA client

Install the Recovery Console on Windows 2000 and Windows XP

To install the Recovery Console, perform the following steps:

  • Insert the Windows XP CD into the CD-ROM drive.
  • Click Start, and then click Run.
  • In the Open box, type d:\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons where d is the drive letter for the CD-ROM drive.
  • A Windows Setup Dialog Box appears, which describes the Recovery Console option. The system prompts you to confirm installation. Click Yes to start the installation procedure.
  • Restart the computer.

The next time you start your computer, you will see a "Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" entry on the boot menu.

as outlined in MS KB article 307654

How to Recover from a Corrupted Registry That Prevents Windows XP from Starting

This fix has worked for several other techs I know and is definately something to try if your XP system won't boot.

Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 307545

summary: (do these from recovery console in Windows directory)

md tmp
copy c:\windows\system32\config\system c:\windows\tmp\system.bak
copy c:\windows\system32\config\software c:\windows\tmp\software.bak
copy c:\windows\system32\config\sam c:\windows\tmp\sam.bak
copy c:\windows\system32\config\security c:\windows\tmp\security.bak
copy c:\windows\system32\config\default c:\windows\tmp\default.bak

delete c:\windows\system32\config\system
delete c:\windows\system32\config\software
delete c:\windows\system32\config\sam
delete c:\windows\system32\config\security
delete c:\windows\system32\config\default

copy c:\windows\repair\system c:\windows\system32\config\system
copy c:\windows\repair\software c:\windows\system32\config\software
copy c:\windows\repair\sam c:\windows\system32\config\sam
copy c:\windows\repair\security c:\windows\system32\config\security
copy c:\windows\repair\default c:\windows\system32\config\default
I don't know what I was thinking when I posted this originally. There was a fix from Microsoft that directed me to make many diskettes and boot to them in an attempt to fix the registry. That fix didn't work for me.
