Last adware tip for February

Discover PC has rebooted sometime during full system virus scan. Check log and discover four virus removals. Continue locating adware. Disable "javabc32.exe" and discover it is being replaced by "mspmspsv.exe" "msqn.exe" and "sysey.exe"; attempt to remove, but they are locked by the system. Disconnect network and use "Move on Boot" to remove problem files. Reset Internet Explorer to defaults. Correct share permissions and remove "C:" share. Load updated video driver. Norton updates are able to run now. Delete a few suspicious shortcuts. Discuss findings with customer. Install FireFox browser to help prevent future adware infestation.

Windows XP on second partition of primary drive

Customer was out of disk space on D: drive. Sounded easy enough.. until discovering system has XP installed on 1.8GB D: drive. Apparently, this Compaq shipped with Windows 98 on it's C: drive and just happened to have an extra partition that, for some reason, has received the blessing of an operating system.

Warning ! Partition Magic failed to solve the problem - it shrunk the C: drive to help make more room for D:, but Windows XP got very angry when I tried to move it's partition borders.

After much enlightenment, problem solved by a few tricks:

  • Image XP partition to file in free space on C:
  • delete and recreate partition with last half of drive
  • restore image to new partition
  • modify boot.ini to resemble the following:
[boot loader]
timeout=3
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
C:\="Microsoft Windows"

Somewhere along the way a Windows XP repair ran successfully. Later, the same repair couldn't find the WinXP installation.

good luck !

Norton Corporate 9.0 "Network name not found"

I received this fix from a coworker:

=== === === === === === ===

Hello,

If anyone has a problem doing an AV server rollout with Norton Corporate 9.0, specifically getting a "Network name not found" when trying to add the server, the following fixed the issue for me:

Verify that you have the shares C$ and Admin$ on your Windows NT 4 and Windows 2000 computers. We have reports that installations without the C$ and Admin$ share will also trigger the unknown error. If you do not see the ADMIN$ and $ shares listed, then set up the shares using the Command Prompt or Windows Explorer. To set up the shares using the Command Prompt, type the following lines followed by pressing the Enter key.

      net share admin$
      net share c$=c:

Later, Steve

GoBack should Go Away

Welcome to February's edition of "Why I am crazy"

Customer upgrading from 9GB to 120GB hard drive. (Sounds easy enough) Norton Ghost used for drive copy on Windows XP Pro system.

Normally, Ghost has this nifty little area right before copying where it lets me key in the size of the new partitions (and it already guesses the larger/correct amount). This time there was this funky slider bar at the bottom of the screen. I went ahead and adjusted it to fit the drive.

Guess what? It failed to boot when complete !

After doing a lot of stressing and a little research, I just happened to notice your good ole' buddy GoBack sitting over there laughing at me.

Don't worry about flashing the BIOS, it's GoBack !

Disabling GoBack won't do the trick. It has to be uninstalled. Be sure to boot successfully on original stuff after uninstall completes. There is a funky GoBack uninstaller screen that takes off the crud before booting itself again. Then one good notification from GoBack that it has been removed after you get back to your desktop.

Now my Ghost looks right. The last screen of a disk to disk copy has a place where I can modify the size of the destination partitions. (Turns out that slider bar was always there, but I never noticed it) Hopefully, this is the last copy for this system.

This thread recommended disabling XP's System Restore feature prior to using Ghost.
