What a great place to share :) Here you will find flashes of brilliance caught for all the world to enjoy. .. Actually, these are brief articles describing how I fixed a problem. Every day, I find information online that helps me solve a mystery. So this is me giving back to the community. Thanks for stopping by.. and don't forget to tell your friends!
Let's revisit adware !
Windows XP Professional workstation with Internet Explorer crashing immediately when attempting to open. Install and run both Ad Aware (latest definition file) and SpyBot (with latest updates too). Couldn't download this
Cleanup! utility from
this website and continued to have intermittent IE crashes. Discover error referencing "mshp.dll" as well as links to porn sites replacing normal "page cannot be displayed" information page.
Ran across the following post :

"go to http://www.merijn.org/ and down load the cw shredder it
worked for me I had the search-about.net hijacking my computor
changing my home page and not letting me go to certain sites
now its fine it removes it and tell you how to prevent it
happening again"

Download and run CWShredder from Merijin.org to locate and fix trouble.
Other suggestions were to scan for virus infection and to install Service Pack 1a for Windows XP to prevent reinfection.

Microsoft Office removal wizard
Microsoft Office giving you trouble ?
If you've tried reinstalling the program, but it still gives you the same errors as before, you may need to run this handy dandy uninstaller from Microsoft. That is of course after you rename your "normal.dot" file to make sure it's not just a corrupt file. Either try that or run "winword.exe /a" which tells it to skip over this little config file for testing.
The Removal Wizard can detect and remove Microsoft Office 4.x, Office 95, Office 97, and Office 2000, as well as MultiLanguage packs and individual Office applications.

Well, after about a week of tearing my hair out over this *&%$# error, I finally
found a solution. Basically came down to changing a registry value. Here's the
solution:
Solution for the error 1606 Could not access Network Location. Tools> .All Users\.
1. Startup > Execute... > regedit ---> Accept
2. In the Registry go to:
\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders
3. Common Administrative Tools must have the value: C:\WINDOWS\All Users
4. In the Registry go to:
\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell
Folders
5. Common Administrative Tools must have the value: %SYSTEMROOT%\All Users
Hopefully, posting this will save the time and aggravation I went through with anyone
else who comes across the same error. Gotta admit though, I learned alot about XP
while researching the problem.

I have Windows 2000 but kept getting the same error.
Your solution didn't work for me but I came up with an alternative that did work.
On #5 I substituted the actual directory name in it's place. Instead of
"%SystemRoot%" I entered
"C:\Documents and Settings\All Users"
The Error went away and I'm now able to install and uninstall without problems.

could also be Windows Installer trouble .. Reinstalling the Windows Installer

Registry hack so that multiple users share one profile
This works great for laptop users who want to have the same
Desktop and
My Documents when logging on locally or to a domain.
First, add the users to the local administrators group. Next, open up the registry to the following key ..
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList
look for the path in each profile, and set them the same. I like to pick the preferred path before hand so I know which ones to change.
Good luck ! Be sure to back up your registry before and after doing this just to be safe.
