Easy virus scan using USB to IDE adapter
I got happy on EBay one night and ordered an IDE to USB adapter. Lately I have been using it for scanning hard drives for viruses. It does a great job, but is very slow. This is ideal for locations without adequate internet access. I simply pull the hard drive in question, hook it up to the adapter and plug it up to my laptop. Kick off AVG to scan the drive and replace it when done. No files are locked during scan so everything should clean up nicely with one pass.
Also, no software had to be loaded on the customer PC and I didn't have to wait on any updates to download. (but it scans slow .. so have something else to do while you wait .. or take a couple back-to-back lunches)

Login/Logon to Win2K immediate logoff
the actual "fix" for this is listed as an "Ad-Aware bug"
the trouble i ran into wasn't this particular bug. i ended up formatting and reloading, but here is some of what i tried before giving up:
After upgrading from Win98 to Win2k, system fails to allow access by any username/password combination. The desktop wallpaper briefly flashes before returning to the signon screen. Researched the trouble and found several references to "userinit.exe" and it's registry key. The down side is that I have to way of accessing the registry to check the settings. Network card isn't pulling an IP address. Can't login. Can't access registry.
There are products for $100+ that allow access to a dead registry. I simply recovered the data and did a complete wipeout and clean install. Unfortunately, several applications had to be reinstalled as well.
One virus was found in 5 different locations. Ad Aware was mentioned by a fellow technician to have a bug that may effect userinit, but I did not see the filenames referenced.

Upgrade Windows 98 to Windows 2000
This can be a very smooth process if you prepare the system before installing the upgrade. I recommend using SpyBot to clean up the adware and any good (and updated) antivirus for the rest. For good luck, I dumped the temp files and uninstalled any questionable screensavers as well.
The overall process took between one and two hours start to finish. One PC took one full hour just to load the Win2K upgrade software! All in all I was impressed with the ease and success of the upgrade, but would discourage most customers because of the cost of actual tech time to perform the upgrade plus the cost of the software/license on each PC.
13 PCs upgraded with only one that failed. I believe this one was related to either adware or virus.

Migrate Windows NT 4.0 Domain to Active Directory (2000 & 2003)
short answer: don't even bother
i wish the good folks everywhere had this as the recommendation for attempting this upgrade process. basically, if you upgrade, you lose access to all of the older (netbios) systems. the target has to be active directory (of course) but running in native mode (w2k only!)
solution: rename old domain (if you really like the name) and set up active directory using your preferred name. recreate all users on active directory. go around and remove each pc from the old domain and add it to the new one.
don't forget to hack the registry so that your users get their old desktop back. (HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\ProfileList or something) .. change the "ProfileImagePath" key to the proper directory for each user that needs their old stuff .. oh yeah, be sure and allow them to be local admin so they have permission to get their stuff !
in retrospect, this is what i was trying to do:
Microsoft # 325851
ADMT Tool
okay, my first time to do this and i am having fun with it.. turns out, active directory has to be configured on the destination domain (they missed this in the docs). I like configuring the IP properties before running DCPROMO. That way, it uses my settings instead of making up something nasty.
okay! guess what! stinkin' target has to be native Win2K domain. how stupid... now i'm removing the AD and trying another approach

Dell GX240 nvram reset
I was having trouble with the system crashing intermittently with the HP mentioned in a previous post. The file HP said to rename ended up disabling all of the USB devices (including the mouse). Turns out, the scanner/fax/printer had developed a problem with it's scanning capabilities. Solution: swap devices with a station that doesn't do scanning.
Original Thread quoted below
"You may want to go in the bios and clear the nvram so it will be redetected.
make sure the caps lock is on, scroll lock, and num lock then alt e, alt f
alt b. and make sure jumpers are set to cable select. It should not matter
if it came from a gx240. Also check to make sure it is rec in bios."
F2 is setup on most Dell systems
